What Is Loss of Neck Curvature (Straight Neck)?

Normally, viewed from the side, the neck vertebrae are arranged in a reversed "C" shape. Because of overloading of the spine, poor posture and excessive stress, the spine takes on an "I" shape; this is called loss of neck curvature (straight neck). Many factors prepare the ground for it: sitting bent forward for long periods, lifting heavy loads, blows to the neck, using high and hard pillows, and resting the head on armchairs or sofas without proper support. Straight neck, which starts with long-lasting neck pain, can become unbearable. It can be confused with a herniated disc and is a serious problem.

What are the symptoms?

The most obvious symptoms are chronic pain and difficulty moving the neck. Imaging (X-ray, MRI) is enough for the diagnosis; if MRI shows the neck has straightened, the condition has begun. In later stages the nerve roots are compressed, causing numbness in the areas those nerves supply – usually the arms or legs – as well as weakness and tingling there.

Treatment of straight neck

Treatment depends on the severity. It is very important that patients are well informed and aware. If the condition has not yet started to press on the nerves, exercises with an expert physiotherapist are enough at this stage. Superficial or deep heat, relaxation exercises, electrotherapy and electromagnetic therapy are also used. A neck collar and painkillers also relieve pain during this period. If not treated in time and correctly, straight neck can over time lead to a herniated disc in the neck. If the disease has progressed and presses on the nerve roots, a different treatment path is followed; especially if there is loss of strength, surgery may be needed.
